Introductory Post: Emma’s trip to Austria!

About Me

Hi! My name is Emma Rubin. I just finished my junior year at the University of Pittsburgh. I am majoring in Rehabilitation Sciences with certificates in the Conceptual Foundations of Medicine and Pathokinesiology in Rehabilitation. I am on a physical therapy track and have a guaranteed spot for Pitt’s DPT program. I am from Frederick, Maryland which is about forty-five minutes from both Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD. I chose Pitt for the high science academics, the beautiful campus, the guaranteed admissions program, and the city itself. I have loved my time so far at the University of Pittsburgh. At Pitt, I am involved in numerous different organizations that have allowed me to grow as a person, learn new things, and make many new friends and connections. I am currently the Service Vice President for the national service sorority, Gamma Sigma Sigma. I am a puppy sitter for STEP@Pitt where I help work with service dogs in training. I am also involved in CHAARG, Best Buddies, and the Rehabilitation Sciences Student Association. Outside of Pitt, I have volunteered as a rehabilitation assistant at UPMC Mercy, volunteered with Global Links and Family House, and worked as a physical therapy technician at Active Physical Therapy. I am so excited to go abroad for the very first time and experience other cultures!

Comparative Healthcare in Graz, Austria

I have been lucky enough to be accepted to Pitt’s Panther Program, Comparative Healthcare in Graz! I will be spending three weeks in Graz, Austria and one week in Maribor, Slovenia. This program is designed for pre-health students to learn about another healthcare program other than the United States’. I chose this program because it truly hit every single one of my boxes. I loved that it was healthcare based. I plan to go into physical therapy and have taken many courses that are healthcare related. Once I looked into this program, both classes seemed incredibly interesting and beneficial to my future career. Also, I have never been out of the country before. This program is based in Graz, but we will spend a weekend in Vienna, a weekend in Salzburg, and a week in Maribor, Slovenia. The idea of seeing so many different places on one trip was so intriguing to me!

While in Graz, we will be able to see the Austrian healthcare in ways as scrubbing into a surgery, visiting nursing homes, and seeing pharamacies. I love that I will be able to learn so much of another healthcare system with hands-on activities and allow myself to use this knowledge in my professional and academic career going forward. I also hope that by going abroad for the first time, I will learn about Europe and tips on what to do for future trips to other countries!
