My First Tradition Cypriot Meze Experience

on

There is something so special about visiting a new country and getting to experience the culture there first hand. For me, this moment happened during my first night in Cyprus, during what I thought was going to be a simple dinner. My first “wow” or “aha” moment in Cyprus was our first traditional Cypriot meze dinner. I had heard of the concept of meze before which is small plates meant to be shared dishes and at a leisurely pace. But, nothing could’ve prepared me for the vibrant flavors of tradition and hospitality that was in each of those small plates. From the moment we sat down, endless dish after dish gets brought out one by one. Grilled halloumi cheese, creamy tzatziki and tarama served with pita, fresh tomato, cucumber and feta salad was just the start. Then came out chicken and pork souvlaki, roasted vegetables, sheftalia, and so much more.

What struck me the most wasn’t just the variety but the experience all together. Between each dish we got the chance to have memorable conversations, shared laughter and appreciation. The meal was more than about eating but about sharing the moment with everyone around you. Being the first night, this meze dinner is when I truly started getting closer with my friends on the trip. I will forever be grateful for the memories we shared during each meze dinner.

That first meze dinner was definitely my “wow” or “aha” moment in Cyprus. It was where I felt completely immersed in the culture and the island’s rich traditions. It is a memory I will always cherish!
