After saying goodbye to Cyprus, I have nothing but love and gratitude for the 2 weeks I spent there. I am a different person coming out than I was going in. This trip was truly a once in a lifetime experience. I learned so much about myself and how to adapt to the new environment I was in. Although, I anticipated a few challenges going into this experience such as adapting to a new cultural environment, effectively communicating in a group of peers I have never worked with before and adapting to the experience of being outside the country on my own for the first time. I can confidently say I overcame each one of these challenges better than I expected.

Adjusting to the cultural differences in Cyprus required openness and a willingness to observe, learn, and adapt. In Cyprus, the primary language is Greek. Whether it was saying “efharisto” (thank you) when I purchased something or greeting someone with “yassou!” (hello) I tried my best to communicate respectfully. Through this, I realized that language is more than just a means of communication, it’s a gesture of respect, a bridge between cultures, and a way to show that you care enough to engage with a place on its own terms. Immersing myself in the local customs and expressions not only helped me feel more integrated, but also deepened my appreciation for the Cypriot way of life.

Working alongside a group of peers I had never collaborated with before also taught me valuable lessons in communication, teamwork, and empathy. We learned how to support one another, celebrate our differences, and work towards shared goals, even when perspectives varied. This experience strengthened my interpersonal skills and gave me greater confidence in navigating group dynamics in any setting. I will take these lessons and bring them to Pitt when I work in group projects or in my job when we need to work together to finish a shared task.

Most significantly, this was my first time being outside my home country on my own. That sense of independence and being solely responsible for myself in a completely new place was both daunting and exciting. I proved to myself that I am capable of handling uncertainty, making decisions on my own, and trusting my instincts. These are very important skills to have and develop, especially being in college as I grow more and more independent.

In the end, this trip was not just about exploring a new country, it was about exploring new sides of myself. I will carry the lessons, memories, and connections I made in Cyprus with me for a lifetime. I’m returning home with a fuller heart, a stronger sense of myself, and an eagerness to continue growing through new experiences.
