Michelle’s Last Few Days in Berlin

As the Biosciences Breakthroughs program in Berlin comes to an end, I will take a few key lessons and memories with me along the course of my academic and professional career. One of the main things I learned was to network and really try to make connections with everyone you meet as you never know when you’d need to leverage them later on or how they’d come in handy in the future. I also learned that collaboration is extremely important in the field of science especially when it comes to collaboration between diverse academic and research disciplines. I will carry these lessons through the rest of my academic career at Pitt and beyond with me by making sure I keep an open mind in my professional career to allow for as many connections and collaborations as possible to really forward my career. My parents, peers and advisors/ professors supported me throughout this experience. This experience has changed my vision of my future as I was incredibly intrigued in the presentations of setting scientific breakthroughs into action rather than just making a scientific breakthrough, meaning I’d like to take a career in neural engineering over just neuroscience as it would allow me to put an entrepreneurial spin on neuroscience and research. The advice I’d give a Frederick Honors College student considering this program is that if they truly love learning about science through history and want to look at it through a different cultural lens they should definitely consider this program. Additionally, if the student likes to explore and collaborate with scientists and professors of different cultures they should also consider this program. Something I wished I had known before I left was how much time I’d have on my own to explore Berlin, as if I had I would’ve made a more thorough list of things I wanted to do and see as I would’ve been able to use my time more wisely. I also wish I would’ve been reminded to keep an open mind throughout the trip because I learned so many new things about science and myself during this trip and an open mind was something that definitely allowed me to do this. A few of my favorite memories were just walking around Berlin for a few hours, stopping at little boutiques, unique sites and food shops to take photos and window shop as it was my first real insight into the city of Berlin. I also really enjoyed going on our culinary tour, as we not only learned the history of Berlins most famous dishes and hidden gems, but we also got a taste of each famous dish!
