I was first introduced to the Florence Maymester program, Engineering Perspectives of the Renaissance and Sustainability, during my freshman year. As a freshman I was not eligible to go, so I saved it for a later summer. Now that I have nearly completed my sophomore year, I am beyond excited to get to attend this global experience.
I have always been interested in old architecture; no matter where I am, I always find it so interesting how some buildings have lasted so long, while modern constructions deteriorate after a few decades. This curiosity is a large part of why I chose this program and location. Florence, with its history in the Renaissance, allows me to see firsthand how historical engineering practices, material choices, and design contributed to longevity. I am very interested in understanding how sustainability was built into these structures long before it became a modern consideration.
I can’t wait to see what I learn during this amazing experience!
