Ciao!
My name is Elizabeth Russell, and I am a junior studying natural science on the pre-physician assistant track at Pitt. I am currently studying studio art in Florence, Italy, for the semester. I have been having an amazing time learning and growing as an individual through my classes and travels.
I chose to study in Florence because I consider it one of the art hubs of Europe. While living here, I have access to all of the national museums that are home to famous Renaissance paintings and sculptures, as well as incredible architecture. I have been taking classes such as oil painting, sculpture, museology, and beginner Italian. My favorite activity has been to sit in museums and sketch the sculptures because this is something I do not have access to at home in New Jersey.
Initially, I was intimidated by the idea of starting two new art styles that I had never tried before. As an art minor, my favorite medium has been graphite pencil for drawing portraits and still lifes. Therefore, I was nervous to step out of my comfort zone and try oil painting and sculpture. After spending time in these courses, I have grown as an artist and have discovered my love for oil painting and desire to continue to explore the medium!
Before arriving in Italy, I expected to grow in my professional and personal life by trying new things and making connections. I feel that these skills will help me be a better healthcare professional by being flexible and able to interact with individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Studying abroad for a semester has been a blessing in many ways, especially for meeting some of the most amazing people in my program and in the city. I am so grateful for all of the experiences I have had so far in Florence. I have fallen in love with the city and the people I have met here, and cannot wait for all of the places I will get to travel to over the semester!
