Before studying abroad in Ireland, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. I had never traveled alone before and have always considered myself a homebody. I remember feeling incredibly homesick during my freshman year of college, even though I lived just 30 minutes away from campus. Despite this, I was determined to step out of my comfort zone and embrace something completely new.
This experience has helped me grow both personally and professionally. It expanded my understanding and appreciation of different cultures in ways that went far beyond the classroom. From the language and food to the traditions and history, Ireland had so much to offer. One particularly fascinating aspect was learning about the division between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. While on tour of the country, I learned that Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, a result of centuries of religious and political conflict. The predominantly Protestant Unionist population in the northeast wanted to remain part of the UK, while the mostly Catholic Nationalist population in the south sought full independence for the island. As someone who has always been interested in geography and how countries form, this history was incredibly engaging.
Living in Ireland also challenged me to connect with new people, whether it was fellow students, other tourists, or the Irish locals. Starting conversations with strangers has never been easy for me, but being in a new country surrounded by unfamiliar faces encouraged me to open up. I believe this is a crucial skill, especially as an aspiring nurse. The ability to communicate effectively with anyone is essential in healthcare, and this trip helped me grow more confident in that area.
Finally, this journey sparked a newfound passion and goals for travel. I used to be hesitant about going abroad, and strongly preferred the comfort of home. But now, I see how important it is to explore the world and I think it is something everyone should do. Traveling gives you a broader perspective and allows you to learn so much simply by observing and engaging with others. I personally feel like a more well-rounded person after studying abroad in a new country and will take new skills home with me that I didn’t I think would ever have. I’m excited to see where my next adventure will take me I’m excited to see where my next adventure will take me.
