My global experience encompassed the best and most exciting two months of my life. Pursuing this opportunity constantly pushed me to grow in independence, self-confidence, and embrace a constant state of adventure. Throughout my program, I worked independently on a computer simulation model using ANSYS Fluent technology. I learned the software on my own and applied it to real-world problems, which drove me to answer my own questions and become more self-reliant. Academically, I now have a clearer focus on my post-secondary goals and am more confident in my decision to enter the industry upon my graduation this upcoming May.
Personally, this was my first time truly living abroad. Prior to this program, the longest I had been abroad was a short, two-week Pitt-sponsored program. While those programs were a great introduction to travel, involving familiar professors and peers, this journey required me to navigate everything independently. I was responsible for my own travel plans and well-being at all times, which helped me overcome my fears of independent travel and strengthened my problem-solving skills both inside and outside the classroom.
Professionally, I learned how to work and adapt to new surroundings. Culturally, Southeast Asia is quite different from the United States, pushing me to quickly acclimate to new cultures, time zones, and ways of life. One of my favorite experiences was interacting with locals from the various countries I visited. It gave me a greater appreciation for the privilege of a good education and the opportunity to explore the world. During my nine-week program, I had the joy of exploring Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Japan. This program was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I will never forget or take for granted.
