As I reach the halfway point of my program here in Singapore, I wanted to share some reflections and compare my experience to life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Living in Singapore presents a striking contrast to my hometown. The tropical climate is notably different—hot, humid, and frequently rainy, creating a jungle-like environment. Thankfully, the campus features covered walkways, so rain isn’t much of an inconvenience. The food culture has also been a significant shift from my usual Mediterranean diet. Initially, I missed my pasta dishes, but I’ve since developed a taste for local ramen and dumplings. The campus dining options are fresh and made to order, with a variety of cuisines including Japanese and Korean. I have truly enjoyed exploring new foods and expanding my palate; I’m certain that the food will be one of the things I miss the most about my time abroad.
A standout aspect of my experience here has been connecting with fellow students from various parts of the US and Canada. This has been the most fulfilling part of the program for me, as it has allowed me to develop a sense of community while abroad. Building these relationships has made Singapore feel more like a home away from home, enriching my overall experience.
My daily routine in Singapore shares some similarities with my time at Pitt, with a few adjustments. Since my work is simulation-based, I can choose a comfortable spot on campus with a pleasant view, akin to days at Pitt with a lighter schedule. However, the work culture here is notably more intense, with many individuals working long hours to meet their goals. While I admire this dedication, I am looking forward to returning to a more balanced work environment in the US.
I’ve also noticed some intriguing cultural differences, such as the rarity of takeout and the prohibition on drinking water on public transportation. These small but significant differences add to the richness of my experience here. Overall, life in Singapore has been absolutely incredible and has allowed me to grow in ways I could not have anticipated.
