Farewell for Now: Reflecting on My Unforgettable Journey Through Austria and Slovenia

Hallo! Zdravo!

My study abroad experience in Austria and Slovenia has finally come to an end and as I reflect on it, I can say that it profoundly shaped my outlook on healthcare and will significantly influence my future career as a dentist. The knowledge and skills I gained during this journey will be invaluable in various aspects of my professional and personal life.

My time abroad was packed with educational and cultural activities that offered a deep dive into the healthcare systems of Austria and Slovenia. One of the highlights was visiting the Medical University of Graz, where I attended classes on early Austrian history, medicine, and healthcare. Meeting Austrian students and discussing our educational experiences provided more information into different academic cultures. The tours of healthcare facilities were particularly impactful. Visiting the Albert-Schweitzer Institute, a center for geriatric care, allowed me to see firsthand the technological advancements made to help the elderly. The center’s emphasis on individualized care and the integration of advanced technology into daily routines were eye-opening. Another memorable experience was touring an old pharmacy in Graz and understanding how they used to run. A fun trip to the Lippizaner horse farm and attending an opera to watch “Venus in Seide” added cultural depth to the academic experience.

The weekends were equally enriching. The first weekend was spent in Salzburg, traveling by train, where I was awed by the majestic Alps and the historical charm of the city. The second weekend was a free one, and my friends and I decided to explore Zagreb, Croatia. We visited numerous museums, World War II tunnels, and the breathtaking Plitvice National Park, which offered a perfect mix of history and nature. The third weekend started off with a bus ride to Vienna, a city filled with rich history and stunning baroque architecture. Navigating the subway system with my friends was a new and exciting challenge as Graz and Salzburg mainly relied on bus and tram systems. We visited many historical museums and learned about the history of the Habsburgs, which was fascinating to see in person after studying it in class. Seeing the tombs of Franz Joseph and other Habsburg members added a sorrowful touch to our historical exploration.

We spent the last week in Slovenia, a country that offered a different pace and a deeper connection with nature. We learned about Slovenian history and picked up some basics of the Slovene language. We visited the oldest vine house in the world, the vine being over 450 years old. We went to a medicinal herb garden which resonated with me, as my family uses Ayurvedic medicine from India. The beekeeping visit was unique touch to my time spent in Slovenia; I had never experienced anything like it before, and tasting different types of honey was delightful. Exploring Postojna Cave and Bled Lake showcased Slovenia’s breathtaking natural beauty. Trying the famous Bled cake at Bled Lake was a delicious highlight. Visiting the University Clinical Center and observing the busy ER provided practical insights into healthcare delivery. The VR CPR workshop was particularly innovative, offering a virtual reality experience that made me feel present in the training video.

This journey has made me more resilient and adaptable. Navigating language barriers and cultural differences was challenging yet rewarding. Learning basic German and Slovene phrases helped me communicate more effectively and connect with locals, enhancing my overall experience. Coping with homesickness by building a support system with new friends and staying connected with family made me more independent and confident. These experiences have made me more open-minded and appreciative of different cultures and lifestyles.

The program expanded my knowledge of global healthcare systems, opening my eyes to diverse models of patient care and the historical and cultural factors that shape them. The lectures on the history of Slovenia and Slovene language were particularly enlightening. The visit to Marienambulanz, a hospital for the homeless and poor, and Vinzi Dorf, a hidden homeless shelter, provided a stark contrast to the clean, orderly streets of Graz. These experiences underscored the importance of considering social determinants of health in medical practice.

Observing the meticulous and holistic approaches to healthcare in Austria and Slovenia has inspired me to incorporate similar practices in my future dental career. The emphasis on personalized care and the importance of creating a supportive environment for patients are lessons I will carry forward. Visiting Mosaik, a private company providing care for persons with disabilities, was particularly impactful. Their individualized approach and the integration of therapies like horseback riding to not only bring joy to children but aid in muscle strength were heartwarming and thought-provoking. This contrasted with the American trend of integrating persons with disabilities into society, highlighting different philosophies of care.

The key takeaway from my program is the value of empathy and personalized care in healthcare. I plan to bring this perspective back to Pittsburgh by sharing my experiences through presentations and discussions with my peers and professors. Specifically, I will be holding a presentation with a poster board detailing my experiences . Furthermore, I aim to integrate my understandings into my studies and future practice, ensuring that I consider the cultural and individual needs of my patients. The friendships and professional connections I made abroad have expanded my network, providing opportunities for future collaborations and continuous learning. For instance, the relationships built with peers and professionals in Austria and Slovenia will be critical as I continue to explore global healthcare practices. In conclusion, my study abroad experience has been transformative. It has not only broadened my academic and professional horizons but also enriched my personal growth. As I return to Pitt, I am excited to apply the lessons learned and continue my journey towards becoming a compassionate and culturally competent healthcare professional. Thank you to everyone who supported and followed my journey.

Sincerely,

Yuki Pinisetti
