Halfway through my journey in Graz!

Hallo again, everyone!

I can hardly believe it, but I’m already halfway through my study abroad experience in Graz, Austria. The past two weeks have been nothing short of incredible, filled with new experiences, learning opportunities, and personal growth. With two more weeks to go, I’m excited to share my reflections and some of the highlights of my journey so far.

The first week was a blur of activity, with tours of the city revealing its history and vibrant atmosphere. Visits to the Medical University of Graz and classes on early Austrian history, medicine, and healthcare provided fascinating insights into the country’s academic and healthcare landscape. Meeting Austrian students added a personal touch to my experience, fostering cross-cultural connections and broadening my perspective. One of the most memorable moments was our visit to the Albert-Schweitzer Institute, where we witnessed firsthand the technological advancements aimed at enhancing geriatric care. From pharmacies to horse farms and even an opera performance, every excursion was filled with new discoveries and cultural immersion.

The second week was equally packed with enlightening experiences. Tours of an old pharmacy offered a glimpse into Austria’s rich pharmaceutical heritage, while visits to Marienambulanz and Vinzi Dorf shed light on the country’s approach to healthcare for the homeless and disadvantaged. It was striking to see the care and attention to detail in providing support for those in need, a distinct contrast to the challenges faced in the United States. Exploring Mosaik, a disability service and support organization, left a profound impression on me. The thoughtful and comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of individuals with disabilities strongly displayed Austria’s commitment to inclusivity and social welfare.

The weekends were mainly time for exploration and bonding with my fellow peers. We were able to create our own itinerary with smaller groups which not only strengthened our independence but also connections. On our first weekend, we went to Salzburg, Austria. We wandered through the city’s historic streets, indulged in Mozart’s musical heritage, feasted our eyes on the baroque styled architecture, and shared moments of laughter. I also got to try authentic Austrian cuisine which led me to a greater appreciation for food and different types of flavors. It was a weekend of forging meaningful bonds and creating memories that would undoubtedly last a lifetime. Our second weekend was Zagreb, with its rich tapestry of history and culture, had offered a different kind of adventure. We visited the Plitvice National Park which left us in awe with its nature.

As I reflect on the past two weeks, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Austria and its surroundings in such a profound way. The clean streets, the absence of homelessness, and the abundance of support services serve as reminders of the value of community and compassion. With two more weeks ahead, I eagerly anticipate the adventures, discoveries, and flavors that await me.

Tschuss!
