Episode 1: Alexis is Going to Argentina!

About Me

Hello, my name is Alexis Byrom, and I am a freshman nursing student at the University of Pittsburgh. I grew up just outside of Pittsburgh, and I decided to go to Pitt because I love the campus and it has a great nursing program. For most of my childhood and into high school, I was convinced that I would be going to college for something like biology or engineering, but after several encounters with the medical system and the amazing providers within it, I decided that working in healthcare was the perfect balance of science and human application. During my senior year of high school, I got my EMT license and starting working with a local EMS service to get some experience with patient care. This experience confirmed for me that nursing was what I want to do with my life. My goal is to eventually get my DNP in adult/gerontology critical care and work in an ICU or oncology unit. On a slightly different note, I have four cats at home and two younger sisters. I love doing crafts like crochet, knitting, and embroidery. I also love listening to music and discovering new artists.

About Plus3 Argentina

Plus3 Argentina is an incredible opportunity to spend two weeks in Argentina studying the unique healthcare system while also experiencing the culture of Buenos Aires, which is where we will be staying. Argentina is a country whose history involved the melding of many different cultures, creating a very unique and special place. I chose this program for several reasons. One is that I am very interested in healthcare administration and organization. This experience is the perfect opportunity to explore an alternative healthcare system and the strengths and weaknesses that come along with it. At some point in my career I would like to work in healthcare administration or policy, and this trip will give me a great jumping off point for understanding different models of healthcare systems and how to most effectively implement them. Another reason I chose this program was because I am attempting to gain at least a basic understanding of Spanish while I’m in college. I took a different language throughout middle and high school, so I’m essentially starting from square one in terms of Spanish. Living in a Spanish speaking country for even just two weeks will provide an immersive experience where I can practice what I’ve learned so far and see what all I have left to learn. I also knew coming into college that I wanted to study abroad at some point, and this program was a perfect fit in terms of timing. A full semester abroad would be difficult to fit into the nursing curriculum, so Plus3 provides a great alternative to that while still getting the study abroad experience.
