Although only two weeks, this program has broadened my perspective on not only engineering and business, but also the world as a whole and the people in it. While I did expect for it to be a very insightful and beneficial experience, I never would have imagined that this short period of time would have affected me in such a way that it did. I learned so much both during and outside of lectures, providing me with a very broad range of insight on a variety of topics. I was able to make so many meaningful connections, both with my peers and the people native to Costa Rica, which proved to be very valuable both from an educational and from a personal standpoint.  

If I were to give any advice to someone planning on studying abroad, I would say to make sure to experience as much as you can and truly immerse yourself into the lifestyle of someone from that country. For our experience, we got the opportunity to stay in a homestay, which allowed us to more thoroughly experience life as if we actually lived in Costa Rica. While all programs may not have this immersive of an experience, there are other ways to surround yourself by the culture of where you are staying. Make sure to go outside of the tourist-centered areas, connect with locals, and be open to all new experiences that come your way. The purpose of studying abroad is to learn about another culture while also getting the chance to take courses that will provide knowledge for your major, so by doing this you will ensure you are maximizing the potential of this experience.  

My program did not really change any of my goals, but rather confirmed that I was correct in the path that I had chosen. Prior to the program, I was not entirely sure if the path I had chosen were the correct one. I decided on environmental engineering, and although I had put a lot of thought into my choice, there was still a sense of doubt regarding it. However, after going to Costa Rica and really seeing the different ways that I could apply the knowledge from my courses, I knew I had made the right choice. My favorite parts of the trip were those where we were outside, looking at and exploring nature. Even if I do not end up directly working in that sort of environment, I know that what I do will help to preserve that type of environment, which makes my work all the more worthwhile.
