My Cohort- Daley Fraser

Being alongside the Brackenridge Fellowship recipients, I have been exposed to thought-provoking ideas. During my conversations, two projects stood out to me.

Firstly, I had a discussion with Isaac Gamwo regarding his project, which focuses on developing new methods to categorize pain. Personally, I have visited doctors numerous times and have often encountered difficulties in accurately conveying my experience of pain through the limited prompts and options provided on an iPad. I believe that a more comprehensive system would have greatly benefited me. I am intrigued to follow Isaac’s project and see how it progresses, as it might resonate with my own personal experiences.

Secondly, I met Michael Agadis, who is conducting research on nihilism. Initially, I found the concept to be comforting—the idea that nothing matters can feel like a weight being lifted off one’s shoulders, granting a sense of freedom. However, after conversing with Michael, I discovered his perspective, which highlights the negative impact of nihilism on society. He emphasized the importance of an inherent moral compass to uphold ethical standards. These profound questions about life fascinate me because they lack definitive answers, and each college student, including myself, is currently shaping their own moral framework. Engaging in such discussions can significantly influence our personal growth and help us become the best version of ourselves.

Interacting with other Brackenridge participants, I hope to delve into more challenging problems, explore diverse research techniques, and foster meaningful friendships along the way.

In my own project, I am collaborating with three SHURE-Grid recipients who come from different majors, namely computer science, bioengineering, and business. This diverse team composition has proven to be a significant advantage, as each member brings a unique perspective when approaching the same problem. Combining our individual strengths, we work collaboratively to arrive at the best possible solution.
