Up Next, Brussels!

Bonjour! My name is Adriana, and I am just a week away from embarking on an exciting journey to Brussels, Belgium as a part of the Panther Exchange Program with Université Libre de Bruxelles! This exchange program stood out to me particularly because of the incredible opportunity to perfect my French; in fact, all of my classes will be taught in French! I am anticipating a bit of stress as I begin the semester, but I am beyond thrilled to immerse myself in the French language while abroad in one of the most international cities in the world. I am crossing my fingers that I come back fluent!

I chose this program because of my interests in international law after my undergraduate here at Pitt. I am currently in the process of applying to law schools (keeping me busy for sure!), and I am particularly interested in the international dual degree options provided by my top choices. Pitt Law, for instance, has a fantastic Center for International Legal Education that offers an entire year abroad at Sorbonne University in Paris, allowing law students to earn both a French and an American law degree! I plan on participating in these types of programs in law school, but I first need to perfect my French. Brussels is not only the perfect place to practice French, but Brussels is also the center of European Law, so I hope to learn more about the international legal processes that occur right in the city while I am there!

In Brussels, I will be taking courses mostly within my major: psychology. While at Pitt, I focused most of my psychology studies around cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics. Language development and acquisition are my favorite psychology topics! In my personal life, I also have a passion for learning foreign languages; I grew up bilingual (Bulgarian and English) and learned French as a child, later learning Spanish in high school. I also love putting my foreign language skills to use- I am an avid traveler! I live in Bulgaria each summer and have traveled all across Europe with my family. We have been to Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain, Portugal, and Malta. I cannot possibly choose a single favorite, but Switzerland, Spain, and Malta are all tied for my top picks!

In my spare time, I enjoy reading murder mysteries, watching movies that send me into existential spirals, visiting Ikea for no reason other than taking a leisurely stroll, and searching for the best sunset-viewing spots. Hopefully Brussels has some cool viewpoints for sunsets- I’ll keep you all posted!

I cannot wait to begin this global experience, and I cannot wait to bring you readers along!
