Hi everyone!
My name is Sloane, and I am an Environmental Engineering student doing a study abroad experience this semester in Ireland. I personally chose this program because of its connections to Pitt’s engineering program. This semester I want to take it easy and really be able to enjoy the culture and the experience.
During my time here I hope to expand my world view by meeting people from different cultures. The University of Limerick has a sprawling international program, bringing in students from all around the world. As someone who grew up where she now goes to school, it’s important to me that I expand my horizons and go out of my comfort zone whenever possible.

Here’s me at the Cliffs of Moher ! A very windy day, as you can tell…
I have signed up to take Spanish and Irish language courses while I am here, along with a core class in my curriculum, and an engineering technical elective. Similar to being in a new country, I hope learning new languages will help me think in new ways. Though I don’t know if I will take more Irish language courses when I return home, I have already found just the introductory material to be so beautiful and thought provoking. As a bonus, it’s also helped me gain a deeper understanding of the culture, and how the Irish language influenced the Irish English dialect!
I was so nervous about the trip here that I tried not to form any expectations. I was worried, and I wondered if I would have a hard time finding other students to connect with. Luckily, there are so many wonderful people at UL who make sure that the international students find each other and have someone to bond with about being away from home. For example, my roommates are all here on exchange, from all around the world. I am so glad I chose this program, and I’ve found such a wonderful crew to explore Ireland with.

One of my favorite features of UL’s campus: the Shannon River! It flows right through the middle.
