As a young director who was pushing far beyond my previous work, I think the greatest hurdle to overcome was the immense workload, organization, and confidence required to pull our project off. I remember constantly planning our next moves, the next shot, and the next shooting day. Our painter, my assistant director, and the many other people involved in the project were constantly looking to me to make decisions, because at the end of the day this was what I wanted to do so I better make it work out. The level of expectation that I placed on myself, I think, really allowed me to push past what I had ever done before while remaining in my “comfort zone” of what I knew I was capable of achieving should I continue to make the best decisions I could. This creative experience was naturally intertwined with my experience abroad, as each minute spent on location was really just time spent on the beaches of Senegal, speaking with locals of the Yoff coast, and working with my team to achieve a common creative goal.
