As I prepare to return to campus for my junior year, I have found myself reflecting on my time in London and everything this experience has meant to me. Looking back, it is hard to believe how quickly the summer passed and how much I learned during those few weeks.
When I first discovered the London Pre-Health Internship Program, I was immediately excited. I had always known that I wanted to study abroad, and this program felt like the perfect combination of everything I was looking for. It gave me the opportunity to live in a new city, gain healthcare experience, and immerse myself in a different culture. However, before I arrived in London, excitement was accompanied by some nervousness. I did not know the people I would be living with, I was unsure whether I would enjoy living in such a large city, and I wondered if I would feel homesick. I also had no idea what to expect from my internship. Looking back now, I can confidently say that this experience was everything I hoped for and so much more.
One of the most meaningful parts of my summer was the people I met along the way. I found a group of friends who truly changed me for the better and made this experience unforgettable. They were always willing to explore a new neighborhood, try a new restaurant, or take advantage of every opportunity London had to offer. More importantly, they provided support, encouragement, and friendship throughout the entire journey. The memories we created together are some that I will carry with me long after this summer, and I am incredibly grateful that they were part of this experience.
I also discovered just how much I love London. There is something unique about the city’s energy. I loved the fast-paced atmosphere of busy areas like central London, while also appreciating the quieter neighborhoods that offered a sense of calm despite being in one of the world’s largest cities. Over time, London began to feel familiar. By the end of the program, I could confidently navigate the Tube and find my way around the city on my own. That sense of independence was incredibly rewarding. While I do not know what the future holds, I know that I would welcome the opportunity to live in London again someday.
Finally, my internship at King’s College Hospital exceeded every expectation I had. I had the privilege of working alongside incredible clinicians and learning from professionals who were passionate about patient care. My supervisor was an exceptional mentor who challenged me, supported me, and helped me grow both professionally and personally. Through my experiences in the hospital, especially the opportunity to shadow on pediatric wards, I gained a clearer understanding of the type of physician I hope to become. The experience strengthened my passion for medicine and solidified my interest in neonatology. Seeing the impact that healthcare professionals have on patients and their families inspired me and reinforced my motivation to pursue this career path.
This experience pushed me outside of my comfort zone, helped me grow in ways I never expected, and introduced me to people and opportunities that have had a lasting impact on my life. I know the experiences I had there will continue to shape me for years to come and I am so grateful for this opportunity.
