When I first arrived in Portugal, I was absolutely terrified. I had no clue what to expect. All I knew was that I was entering a whole new undiscovered territory. This is technically my first time solo traveling, so I was basically just playing everything by the ear.

The first couple weeks have felt like a baby in an unlimited candy store. It has felt like I haven’t sat down for an eternity. While it is tiring, I do love it. Exploring the city has definitely kept me busy. Coming during June was very exciting cause it is the month of festivals! I had no clue this was even happening until I walked out one day and the streets were covered with food trucks and people dancing. It was unexpected, but very fun. Working in the hospital has also been very exciting. I get to speak with patients and practice my Portuguese, which is a huge goal of mine.

Things like walking around exploring the city, watching sunsets, and making new friends has been the best part of my experience so far. One of my favorite little hobbies so far is walking into bookstores and trying to read or understand different novels in Portuguese. Trying the new different types of food has also been one of my favorite things do. Although basic, I do love pastel de natas. Something about Portuguese pastries is so delicious.

I hope to gain so many more memories like the ones I’ve already made. The start of this has given me a little taste of what my coming weeks could look like, and it is very exciting. I hope to discover new food and sightseeing spots in Lisbon.
