Having completed my first two weeks at school, I feel like my Polish has improved quite a bit. Being in an environment for six hours a day where we communicate only in Polish during class has really pushed me to learn quickly. Not only have we been studying the language, but I’ve also had the opportunity to explore some incredible places around Kraków.

On the Fourth of July, we visited Kopiec Kościuszki, where there was a beautiful display of both Polish and American flags to celebrate the holiday. We also toured Wawel Castle and several churches throughout the city. The sights were stunning, and I learned so much about Poland’s rich history. While visiting Kopiec Kościuszki, I learned about Tadeusz Kościuszko’s Polish-American ties and his role in helping defend Philadelphia during the American Revolution.

The following weekend, we traveled to the Wieliczka Salt Mine. I had heard how beautiful it was, but nothing could have prepared me for what I saw. The mine was filled with incredible sculptures and an awe-inspiring church carved entirely out of salt. While we were inside the church, a woman began singing in Polish, and the way her voice echoed throughout the chamber was absolutely angelic. It was one of the most memorable moments of my trip so far.

We also visited Tyniec Abbey, a monastery that was built in the 11th century. It was incredible to see how well it has been preserved over the centuries. As an added bonus, I had the best cappuccino at the café overlooking the monastery grounds and Wisla river. 

I am excited to get back into the swing of things this week, continue improving my Polish, and further engage with my Polish heritage.
