As my trip comes to an end, the lessons I have learned both inside and outside the classroom will stay with me throughout the rest of my academic career and beyond. Learning about the importance of sustainability and its impact on communities is something I will carry with me whenever I design or analyze a system. One concept that was emphasized throughout the program was how natural ventilation can cool a home without relying heavily on HVAC systems, reducing energy consumption and promoting more sustainable living.

My biggest supporters throughout this experience have been my parents. They regularly checked in on me, encouraging me to work hard in my studies while also taking the time to explore the city and fully immerse myself in the experience.

This program has changed my vision for the future by strengthening my determination to incorporate sustainability into whatever company or industry I work in. It showed me that engineers have the ability to make meaningful contributions toward creating a more sustainable world.

My advice to future Frederick Honors College students considering this program is to learn as much as possible about the local culture and language before arriving. Doing so makes everyday tasks, such as grocery shopping and navigating the city, much easier and allows you to connect more deeply with the community.

One thing I wish I had known before leaving is that not everything will go according to plan and that is completely okay! During my time abroad, I got food poisoning, nearly missed a train back to Florence, and did not pack enough warm clothing for the unexpectedly cold and rainy first week. Despite these challenges, everything worked out in the end, and I still had an incredible experience.

Some of my favorite memories include visiting the various Churches throughout Florence, climbing the Duomo and seeing the incredible view, and traveling to different cities such as Rome, Venice, and Viareggio.
