Hi! I’m Charlotte DeVoir and I just finished my first year at the University of Pittsburgh. I am currently majoring in biological sciences and pursuing the Conceptual Foundations of Medicine certificate. I am also a part of the Frederick Honors College and the Nu Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Phi.

In the following weeks, I will be participating in the FHC Frederick First’s Social Roots of Medical Innovation Program. The program focuses on social, political, economic, and technological factors that influence health and human care, consisting of 5 days in Pittsburgh and 10 days in Belfast. Through exploring both cities, a comparison can be made between the social conditions in both communities and the similarities and differences within their respective care systems.

I have always known that I wanted to study abroad, though I was anxious to be away from home for a long period of time and wanted to experience other opportunities over the summer. This program was perfect for me because of its short duration, allowing me to still study abroad and experience a different country and its culture, while also having time for other opportunities.

I was also drawn to the program because of its interesting and engaging focus. I am excited to learn more about the conditions that drive different medical initiatives through exploring local and international communities. I am also excited to learn more about the history of these communities and form an understanding about the social and political backgrounds of care systems. Through this program and talking with experts, I will be able to apply my understanding to my future in the medical field, learning how to approach problems in the healthcare system, specifically related to healthcare disparity and access.
