Hello! My name is Izzy, and I am a Freshman at the University of Pittsburgh on a pre-physical therapy track. I am pursuing a degree in rehabilitation science, along with certificates in disability studies and pathokinesiology, and a minor in dance. I am also in the Frederick Honors College, a member of Pitt Dance Ensemble, and Pitt Ballet Club!
This May, I will be participating in the FHC Frederick Firsts: Social Roots of Medical Innovation in Northern Ireland program. In this program, I will be spending one week in Pittsburgh and one week in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
When planning my summer, I knew I wanted to study abroad, but I was overwhelmed by the idea of being out of the country on my own, and I wanted to be able to hold a job as well– which is why this Maymester program is perfect for me. As a Freshman from New Jersey, the city of Pittsburgh is still very new to me, and starting our trip on home turf will serve as a way to build my historical background and connection to Pitt. Plus, because the program is only two weeks, I am able to work the rest of the summer, getting the best of both worlds!
But the part I am most excited for is the opportunity to travel somewhere new and gain a broader perspective on healthcare systems in different environments. There is so much history and culture in both Pittsburgh and Belfast that I am so excited to explore and make connections between. Additionally, being a part of this program gives me the opportunity to network with individuals with experience in solving problems within the healthcare system and insight into the industry that would be incredibly helpful in the future for both my career and my strive for the solution to disparity in disability studies.
I can’t wait to share my journey with all of you!
