Weekend Ski Trip in Chamonix!

on

One of the best parts about living in France is how drastically the landscape changes depending on where you go. In Paris, everything feels relatively flat and urban, but just a few hours away, the towering peaks of the French Alps completely transform the scenery.

As someone who loves staying active and spending time outdoors, I knew I had to take advantage of this while studying abroad. So, I planned a weekend trip to Chamonix, a small mountain town at the base of Mont Blanc, and just about an hour from Geneva. It’s one of the most iconic destinations in the Alps, especially for skiing, and it had been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember.

The skiing itself was incredible. The slopes are open from around 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., which initially felt early to me. But I quickly realized why—night skiing isn’t really a thing here, and by mid-afternoon, the sun starts to dip behind the mountains, making visibility more difficult. It’s a different rhythm compared to what I was used to in the United States, but it adds to the uniqueness of the experience.

But skiing in the Alps isn’t just about the slopes, it’s also about what comes after. The après-ski culture is a huge part of the experience. After a long day on the mountain, everyone gathers to grab a drink, relax, and socialize. It reminded me a lot of the French tradition of the aperitif (having drinks before dinner) but with a more lively, celebratory atmosphere. Even though most people are just visiting for the weekend, there’s this strong sense of community. Everyone was incredibly friendly and open, which made the whole experience feel even more special.

Skiing in the Alps had been a dream of mine since I was little, and getting to finally experience it in a place like Chamonix was unforgettable. It exceeded my expectations in every way possible. Between the breathtaking scenery, the challenging slopes, and the vibrant après-ski culture, it’s an experience I’ll be thinking about for a long time.
