From Pittsburgh to Portugal

Hello! My name is Gizelle and I am a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh pursuing degrees in political science and economics, along with a certificate in human rights and social justice.

This summer, I will be participating in the FHC Portugal internship program, and I am incredibly excited to begin this journey! As a second-year college student, I have come to appreciate the value of experiential learning and hands-on experience. During winter break, I found myself weighing the options of studying abroad or pursuing an internship– which is why the global internship programs immediately caught my attention. Not only does this program combine both of my summer goals, but it also offers the opportunity to immerse myself in a novel environment and develop cross-cultural competencies that will prepare me for a future career in law.

Throughout the Spring 2026 semester, I have explored several aspects of European government and politics, particularly migration, transatlantic relations, and the framework of the European Union. On an academic and professional level, I hope to further the foundational knowledge that I have built inside the classroom and apply it to my internship placement. I am especially interested in studying the geopolitical and economic challenges that increased migratory pressures and political tensions pose to EU member states. Beyond the classroom, I look forward to making new connections and engaging in global collaboration, which will teach me the skills to work in an international setting.

Most of all, I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to travel to a new country and gain a greater sense of independence. Having been born, raised, and continuing my studies in Pittsburgh has been a wonderful experience, but I am excited to broaden my perspective while living on my own for the summer. Although I am an experienced traveler and have visited several Middle Eastern and Latin American countries, I have never been to Europe. After hearing so much from my friends and family about how wonderful Lisbon is, I am eager to continue my academic journey in the heart of Portugal, build lasting friendships, immerse myself in new culture and language, and share this journey with all of you!
