During my study away experience, I have learned so many important lessons both inside the park and within our lodging at the K-Z Guest Ranch. However, the most influential knowledge I have gained was the impact of effective science communication and the importance of being able to convey information to varying audiences. Back at the University of Pittsburgh, my life as a college student is somewhat sheltered, the surrounding campus area is bustling with fellow college students and professors. This makes communication easy when everyone has a similar educational background and understanding.
Outside of this bubble, a large portion of the population may not know more than a middle school science level, this can make community engagement difficult. When meeting with members from the Bueru of Land Management, they mentioned the push back that they receive from members of the local community when starting new projects that aim to help preserve the landscape of the area. Most of this pushback comes from a lack of understanding but it can be remedied if we understand where the other party is coming from and if we meet them where they are.
Slowing down and taking time to thoroughly explain the processes of ecological and environmental work, and their impacts, can help bridge the gap between communication and understanding.
