Personally, I expect to grow in self-confidence and resilience by navigating a new environment on my own. I’ve set the goal of using public transportation independently, ordering meals in German, and engaging in unfamiliar social situations, all of which push me outside my comfort zone. These seemingly small actions are actually foundational; they’re daily reminders that I’m capable of adapting, problem-solving, and being resourceful in real-time. I also hope these experiences will help me become more comfortable with discomfort, learning to embrace uncertainty as a space for growth rather than something to avoid.
Professionally, I am particularly eager to deepen my understanding of how history and social studies are taught in a global context. Berlin offers a unique opportunity to explore how historical narratives, especially around World War II and the Cold War, are presented in public spaces, museums, and schools. I plan to visit places like the Jewish Museum and the Berlin Wall Memorial, not just as a tourist, but as a future educator seeking to understand how societies reckon with complex pasts. I want to bring those insights back into my own classroom someday, where fostering historical empathy and critical thinking is essential.
In addition to personal independence and academic insight, I hope to strengthen my cross-cultural communication skills. By intentionally initiating conversations with locals, classmates, and educators, I want to better understand cultural perspectives that differ from my own. These interactions will not only enrich my understanding of German culture but will also help me become a more empathetic and effective educator, someone who can connect with students from all backgrounds.
Ultimately, I hope this program helps me adopt a more global mindset. I want to return home with a deeper appreciation for cultural nuance, a willingness to question my assumptions, and a clearer sense of how interconnected our histories and futures are. Growth, to me, will mean more than just adjusting to life abroad; it will mean returning with new habits of thought, a broader worldview, and a stronger sense of who I am becoming, both personally and professionally.
