I was too young to remember the first time I flew internationally. At four years old my family took a trip to Portugal, where my maternal grandparents had both grown up and later immigrated from. Now, over fifteen years later, I’m traveling to my paternal side’s origin point of Sicily. While I am certainly looking forward to my coursework (I mean food studies… in Italy… c’mon!) this experience is also bringing up some intense personal and professional milestones.

I never imagined the stars would align so perfectly as to provide me the chance to study abroad in the exact location my grandfather grew up. Italy is a large country, and this is even the first time the program is being held in Sicily. Being here means connecting with my roots and understanding my history. It is obvious that the culture here will be different from back home, but I am so excited to find my place in it all and how it connects to my story. All of my family’s traditions and memories are taking on new meaning. Self discovery is an essential part of life and I am so lucky that I am able to pursue that journey abroad.

As a communications student, global experience can be a game changer. Interconnectivity is at the heart of today’s world. There is an edge to be gained by having one’s finger on the pulse. Through this program I will be able to add a new audience to my repertoire of understanding. Going forward my work will be more effective from multiple diverse perspectives. As I look towards my future, the awareness I receive from cultural immersion will only be beneficial.
