Ciao Firenze!

Hi! My name is Maddie Mumma, and I have just begun my six-week study abroad program in Florence, Italy. I am a rising junior at the University of Pittsburgh, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Statistics alongside a Sports Studies Certificate and an Honors Degree through the David C. Frederick Honors College. Additionally, I will begin taking graduate courses toward my Master’s in Statistics starting my junior year. After education, I intend to explore a career as a statistician and potentially combine my occupation with my passion for athletics. During my time in Florence this summer, I am taking two courses, Italian: Here and Now as well as Beginning Oil Painting. Both classes are outside my typical courseload at Pitt, which can be both exciting and daunting at the same time.

Outside the coursework for my program, I hope to grow as an individual here. I have not had the opportunity to travel to a foreign country, so this experience grants me the chance to immerse and challenge myself in a new culture. I love trying new things, traveling, and exploring the outdoors; therefore, I plan to see as much as possible during my time in Italy. While I am a student in the Statistics Department at Pitt, I have always had a love for the arts since I was young. As the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence permits me the chance to delve into my passions outside statistics, including art, food, and fashion. Studying abroad in Florence places me in proximity to appreciate famous art pieces, museums, and architecture. Trying new, authentic cuisine excites me because food provides a magnifying glass into other backgrounds and cultures. I admire Italy’s focus on quality of ingredients and deep culinary traditions. Finally, Florence encourages me to find my personal style within a city bursting with fashion.

In addition, the program will develop my professional skills and prepare me for a future career as a statistician. The skills of adaptability and problem-solving gained from studying abroad are essential to any career, especially in mathematics and data analysis. Learning a new language and interacting with locals builds communication skills, allowing me to work with people from diverse backgrounds. Florence, with its rich history in the arts, gives me the creativity to observe my work with different perspectives. Exposure to a new culture and environment highlights new populations, data sets, and issues. A global experience creates the opportunity to interpret data with a broader perspective and apply statistics to different contexts around the world.

I am so excited for the adventures that lie ahead! Ciao for now!
