A few weekends ago, my friends and I decided to use our slightly longer weekend to make a trip down to the Amalfi Coast! We ended up leaving Friday afternoon, spending one night in Naples, and continued on to Sorrento, where we spent Saturday night and most of Sunday. But for this blog post, I want to focus more on our experience in Naples because it was truly one I will never forget.
The past cities we had visited on this trip, while beautiful and interesting, have all felt very curated towards tourists. Naples had a distinctly different feel to it; it felt lived-in and authentic. I think this visit was the first time that I truly felt like I was in a different country.
My “wow” moment came late Friday night as we wandered through the streets of Naples. What we didn’t know when we booked our trip was that the Naples soccer team was playing in their league championship that night. The streets were chaotic to say the least, blue smoke was everywhere, balloons and streamers were hung from balconies– it was like we walked into a sea of blue. It was a little overwhelming, but it felt so different from anywhere I had ever been.
We spent the night hunting for somewhere to get some authentic pizza and enjoying all of the excitement of the upcoming game. On our way back to the Airbnb, we passed projectors set up in alleyways and piazzas, with crowds gathered around cheering for the game. People hugged, yelled, and celebrated together, completely immersed in every high and low of the match. The sense of community I felt in the city was unimaginable. This was the first time I truly understood what it meant to be immersed in a different culture.
This experience became a real learning opportunity for me. It reminded me that meaningful travel doesn’t always feel easy or perfectly planned. Sometimes it’s loud, confusing, and a little messy. I walked away from Naples not just with photos, but with a deeper appreciation for authenticity and the reminder that stepping outside of your comfort zone brings you the best experiences.
