Hello! My name is Rhoslyn Kersten and I am from Philadelphia, PA (yes, actually in the city). I am currently in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences as well as the David C. Frederick Honors College here at Pitt as an undecided student. I have a lot of different interests (and am very indecisive) so am taking the time to explore and find what I want to do for the foreseeable future. I am honored to have been selected to participate in the Plus3 Netherlands trip and look forward to sharing my experiences!

I have always had a desire to travel and knew that studying abroad would be a priority of mine coming into college. After finding the Plus3 Netherlands program, I immediately began working on an application, as having the opportunity to study abroad this early in my college career is so valuable. There are a lot of benefits to studying abroad that span further than just being exposed to a new environment and culture, however favorable that is. Similar to beginning college, this is one of my first experiences where I am on my own. While I will have the faculty, as well as my peers, on the trip, I will be in a new environment that allows me to develop new skills. In navigating Amsterdam and Rotterdam, I will further develop my independence outside of my home bubble, allowing me to feel more confident attacking challenges in my future. On a more professional note, this opportunity will foster an environment where I can make professional connections in another country. Not only this but it will teach me how to better interact and communicate with other professionals. As someone who is undecided on a major and future career, being able to interact with people in various fields will expose me to different paths and allow me to further explore different options that may not be “advertised” as much. My hope for this program is that I am able to leave with a broader view on the world and take with me the valuable lessons in sustainability that The Netherlands has succeeded in applying, and hopefully apply them in some capacity here.
