Far From Home in the Grocery Store

on

The moment it really hit me that I was far from home and experiencing something truly new was during what I thought would end up being a simple task: going to the grocery store. I had just arrived in Florence and wanted to settle into a routine, so I decided to buy groceries instead of eating out. What I didn’t expect was how unfamiliar that one simple experience would be.

As I went into the store, there was so much unfamiliarity. The brands, the food options, and the layout were all so different from what I was used to back home. Most labels were in Italian, and I couldn’t figure out what or where many of the items were. I walked through the aisles feeling frustrated, and honestly a little lost. I had no idea what to buy or how to ask for help. That was the first moment I truly felt how far I was from home.

But in that moment of discomfort, I had the realization that this is exactly why I wanted to come abroad. I had said I wanted to step outside my comfort zone, and here I was, doing that. The grocery store became a place where I reflected about independence, problem-solving, and patience. This small challenge taught me that growth happens in everyday situations, not just in the biggest moments.

I also felt a growing sense of gratitude. I realized how much I take for granted. Things like reading a label or asking a question are so easy to just write off. I have now also realized how much I can learn when I let myself be uncomfortable. Navigating that store, as frustrating as it was, reminded me that I can adapt and find my way, even when things feel unfamiliar.

Since then, I’ve embraced the daily challenges that come with studying abroad. From figuring out public transportation to communicating with people in a new language, each experience has helped me grow more confident and self-aware. That grocery store moment wasn’t just about food; it was about realizing that being in a new environment is exactly where I need to be to grow. This realization shaped the way I approached every new experience here in Florence.
