I have had many wow-factor moments while abroad that have forced me to take a step back and really comprehend how far away from home I was. Traveling across Europe is such a unique experience. It shows how different cultures, languages, and lifestyles coexist within a small geographic area. A one-hour flight can take you from one country to another, and it feels like stepping into an entirely different world. For example, traveling from Spain to France was surreal. Though very close, the differences between the two countries are dramatic. Spain’s laid-back, sunny, open lifestyle contrasts with France’s more sophisticated, restrained culture. The languages, customs, architecture, and food are all so different. The ease of movement between European countries offers an easy way to experience a diverse range of cultures within just a short period of time. This is something that has really stuck with me.

Another shocking feature of Spain is its approach to health, which contributes to one of the highest life expectancies in the world. Spanish cities are very walkable, with pedestrian-friendly streets and many parks. The availability of fresh and affordable produce plays a key role in the Mediterranean diet. Fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, and olive oil are staples in the Sevillian diet. Additionally, Spain’s healthcare system is far more affordable than the States. This combination of physical activity, healthy eating, and accessible healthcare is key to the health of Spain. Promoting these practices in the United States could dramatically improve the health of the people as a whole.
Finally, the biggest mental shock of this experience has been navigating language barriers. Traveling to countries with significant language barriers like France or Morocco can be a very humbling experience. While in these countries, I experienced moments where communication was difficult due to my limited knowledge of the language. Even then, many people understood some English or Spanish, which allowed for basic communication. This gave me a deeper level of empathy for those in the United States who do not speak English as their first language. It takes a lot of courage to approach new people in a language you are still learning. These moments have helped me grow as a traveler.
Hasta luego!
Nina
