Hello! My name is Sarayu Cheemalapati, an undergraduate student pursuing a Political Science major, minors in Korean and Law, Criminal Justice, & Society, and a Human Rights & Social Justice certificate. I had the honor of being one of the first-ever recipients of the John Martinson Elevate Award for Global and Experiential Learning. As someone who has always been fascinated by global cultures, history, and languages, studying abroad has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. This summer, I will be traveling to Seoul, South Korea, where I will study Asian Politics and Global Korean Music & Culture at Yonsei University. As I prepare for this incredible opportunity, I’m reflecting on everything I hope to learn, experience, and take away from this journey.
Why Korea?
For years, Korea has intrigued me with its rich culture, complex history, and rapid development into a global powerhouse. My studies in Korean language and politics have laid a solid foundation, but I know that experiencing Korea firsthand will bring those lessons to life. Seoul, the dynamic heart of Korea, is the perfect place to explore the unique intersection of tradition and modernity.
What I Expect to Learn
I cannot wait to dive into Korea’s vibrant culture. I hope to wander through the historic streets of Bukchon Hanok Village, marvel at ancient palaces like Gyeongbokgung juxtaposed with modern skyscrapers, and savor the delights of Myeongdong Night Market. Beyond sightseeing, I want to connect with locals and gain insight into their daily lives. I know these experiences will provide a perspective that no textbook or lecture ever could.
After spending the last year learning Korean, I’m excited to fully immerse myself in the language. This will be my first opportunity to engage with Korean in its natural environment, whether it’s ordering meals, asking for directions, or making small talk. While I expect moments of hesitation, I’m ready to push beyond my comfort zone and grow my confidence in speaking fluently.
The courses I’ll take at Yonsei University align perfectly with my academic interests. Visiting landmarks like the DMZ and Gwanghwamun Square will provide tangible connections to the political and historical contexts I’ve studied. Through this program, I hope to deepen my understanding of Korea’s role in East Asia and the world.
Above all, I view this journey as an opportunity for self-discovery. Living in a new country on my own comes with challenges, but it also promises countless opportunities for growth. I hope to return home with greater independence, resilience, and adaptability, along with a profound appreciation for Korea’s culture and my own capabilities.

As I pack my bags and practice my Korean, I’m filled with excitement, anticipation, and a touch of nervousness. This trip is more than just a chance to study abroad, but it’s an opportunity to see my academic pursuits come alive, challenge myself in new ways, and gain experiences that will shape me for years to come. can’t wait to share all the lessons, adventures, and surprises that lie ahead!
