As my time in Spain draws to a close, I can’t help but reflect on what an incredible journey this past month has been. I loved every moment of my study abroad experience and truly made the most of it. My study abroad experience exceeded all expectations, leaving me with unforgettable memories, deep connections, and a newfound appreciation for the richness of Spanish culture.
Alcalá de Henares, Host Family, and Classes
From the moment I arrived in Alcalá de Henares, I was welcomed with open arms by my host family. They not only introduced me to authentic Spanish cuisine but also to the warmth and depth of Spanish traditions. Mealtimes here are more than just a quick bite—they’re an experience. We’d often linger at the table for hours, sharing stories and discussing everything from daily life to Spain’s history. This time together allowed me to truly immerse myself in the culture and build lasting relationships.

Alcalá de Henares itself was a delight to explore. Known for its historical significance and as the birthplace of Cervantes, the town offers a blend of old-world charm and vibrant modern life. One of the most impactful experiences was an in-class visit to a local historical hospital, the Hospital of Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia. This visit, along with our lessons, provided a deep dive into the Spanish healthcare system. We learned not just about medical terminology, but also about the cultural nuances that shape patient care in Spain. I loved learning about Ratoncito Pérez, Spain’s version of the Tooth Fairy.
My academic experience wasn’t limited to the classroom. I watched Spanish films that explored the country’s tumultuous history, particularly the Spanish Civil War and the dictatorship of Franco. The topic intrigued me so much that I even watched episodes of Franco: The Brutal Truth about Spain’s Dictator during train rides to different parts of Spain. These films offered a window into the complexities of Spain’s past and its lasting impact on the present.
Madrid, Trains, and Football Parade
Madrid quickly became my go-to weekday destination. The city’s energy is contagious, and there’s no shortage of things to see and do! There were plenty of shops, including Bershka, Stradivarius, and Pull and Bear, which quickly became my favorites. I marveled at the efficiency of the Renfe trains, which made travel to and from the city a breeze—especially when compared to New Jersey’s NJ Transit.
One of my most memorable experiences in Madrid was attending the parade at Plaza de Cibeles after Spain’s victory in the Euro Cup. The atmosphere was electric, with an estimated one million people gathered to celebrate. Standing front row with my friends, I could feel the collective joy and pride of the crowd. Though I wasn’t a huge soccer fan before, I’m definitely a convert now!

Exploring Other Parts of Spain
Weekends were reserved for traveling with friends to other parts of Spain. Each city we visited offered a unique glimpse into Spain’s diverse culture. In Andalucía, I was captivated by the Moorish architecture and the rich history of the South. The Sevilla Cathedral, with Christopher Columbus’ tomb, was a particular highlight. The contrast in perspectives between Spain and the U.S. regarding Columbus was fascinating—while in the U.S. there’s a growing movement to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day, in Spain, Columbus (or Colón, as he’s known here) is still celebrated with pride.
Granada was another highlight, with its strong Moorish influence evident in the architecture, music, and cuisine. The Alhambra, with its intricate designs and breathtaking views, was a sight to behold. I could have spent hours wandering its halls, absorbing the history and beauty of this iconic landmark! It was by far my favorite part of Spain.

In Segovia, the Alcázar stood out as a symbol of Spain’s medieval past, while in Barcelona, the beach provided a refreshing break from the intense heat. After enduring weeks without air conditioning, the cool waters of the Mediterranean were a welcome relief. The Sagrada Familia, although crowded, was awe-inspiring, and I know I’ll need to return to fully appreciate Gaudí’s architectural masterpiece.
As my study abroad program came to an end, I took the opportunity to embark on a solo trip to Málaga. This experience was transformative, boosting my confidence in navigating new places on my own and giving me the chance to reflect on all I had experienced. In Málaga, I visited local shops, explored the Picasso Museum, and hiked the breathtaking Caminito del Rey. I even made a day trip to Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory known for its iconic Rock of Gibraltar and fascinating blend of British and Spanish influences.

Solo travel allowed me to connect with people from different backgrounds, reaffirming that while the world is vast, it’s also incredibly interconnected. Every person I met had a story to share, and I found myself deeply engaged in conversations that could have lasted for hours. One of the most unexpected connections was with my host sister, who has been interning in New Jersey this summer. We’ve already planned to meet up in New York City—proof that the relationships formed during this study abroad experience will endure long after I’ve returned home.
Reflecting on my time in Spain, I realize how much I’ve grown. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of Spanish culture, improved my language skills, and developed a newfound confidence in my ability to adapt to new environments. I no longer shy away from conversations in Spanish, and I feel more connected to the world around me. I cherish every lesson learned, every tradition experienced, and every conversation that made me feel at home in a new country. My time in Spain was short but transformative, and I’ll carry the memories and friendships with me forever.
Spain has left an indelible mark on me, and I’m already looking forward to my next adventure. I’ve already started my research and itinerary for my next summer travel adventures! I’m excited to discover new cultures and their rich histories. This study abroad experience has been a true gift, one that I will cherish for a lifetime.
