A Summer of Growth: Reflections on My Fellowship Experience

Hello everyone!

As my summer fellowship draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on how this experience has reshaped my understanding of research and my future aspirations.

At the start of the fellowship, I found it challenging to articulate my research in cell and molecular biology, specifically focusing on the role of Ganglioside-induced differentiation-associated protein 1 (GDAP1) in regulating mitochondrial calcium levels during oxidative stress. It was easy to get lost in the technicalities and nuances of my work, especially when trying to explain it to those outside my field. However, being part of an interdisciplinary cohort forced me to step out of my comfort zone and discuss my research with peers from various disciplines. Over time, I not only became more comfortable discussing my research but also came to realize the crucial role that collaboration plays in broadening perspectives and enhancing the impact of our work.

Moreover, my understanding of the importance of interdisciplinary research has grown significantly. Engaging with students working on projects ranging from cancer research to the influence of TikTok opened my eyes to the unique ways in which different fields can intersect and inform one another. The connectedness of ideas within our cohort has inspired me to think more broadly about my work and how it can contribute to larger conversations.

One of the most valuable aspects of this fellowship has been the connections I’ve made. The diverse backgrounds and research interests of my peers created a rich environment for collaboration and learning. The discussions we had, whether in formal settings or casual conversations, allowed me to see problems from different perspectives and provided me with insights I would never have considered on my own. These connections have not only enriched my research experience but have also helped me build a network of like-minded individuals who are passionate about making a difference in the world.

Additionally, this summer, I had the pleasure of working as a lead instructor for the Pitt Kid’s summer program, teaching swimming techniques to children aged 5-7. This role was a rewarding experience and provided a refreshing balance to my research-focused summer. Witnessing the kids’ progress and enthusiasm in the water was incredibly fulfilling, and I hope to be part of such programs again in the future.

With the fellowship now behind me, I am eager to pursue new opportunities that will build on what I’ve learned this summer. Academically, I am planning on applying for a national scholarship, which will further support my goals as I prepare for medical school. Professionally, I plan to continue my research endeavors, exploring different fields to broaden my understanding and impact. Personally, I am committed to maintaining the curiosity and openness that this fellowship has instilled in me, as I navigate the next steps in my academic and professional journey.

This summer has been transformative, not just in the work I’ve done but in the connections I’ve made and the perspectives I’ve gained. I’m excited to carry these lessons forward as I embrace the challenges and opportunities ahead!
