Embracing the Unknown: Reflecting on My Brackenridge Experience

The Brackenridge Summer Research Fellowship has been an enlightening experience, deepening my understanding of scientific research and my field of psychology. It has also given me valuable insights into my future career and academic paths, even as it has left me pondering some uncertainties.

Deepened Understanding of Research

Over the summer, my focus on my thesis project broadened significantly. Engaging with various lectures and resources allowed me to gain a more comprehensive understanding of research methods and their applications. These experiences enabled me to see my work from new perspectives and appreciate the interconnectedness of different disciplines.

Interacting with peers from various fields was particularly valuable. Through these conversations, I learned innovative approaches and techniques that I incorporated into my research. For instance, a discussion on qualitative data analysis with a peer helped me refine my coding strategies, adding depth to my analysis and enhancing the overall quality of my research.

Valuable Experiences and Skills

One of the most rewarding aspects during this summer was the hands-on experience in data collection and analysis. Learning to use the R programming language for statistical analysis was a game-changer. This skill allowed me to conduct sophisticated analyses and uncover patterns that would have otherwise remained hidden. Such technical proficiency is crucial for a researcher in psychology and will be invaluable in my future projects.

The sense of community and exchanging ideas with other fellows were also invaluable. These interactions provided practical insights into problem-solving and navigating research challenges. Learning from others’ experiences and approaches helped me become a more adaptable and resourceful research person.

Reflections on the Future

As the fellowship concludes, I find myself contemplating my future academic and career paths. The knowledge and skills I’ve gained have opened up numerous possibilities, but they also bring a sense of uncertainty. While I have clearer insights into potential directions, the array of choices can be overwhelming.

This confusion about the future is not necessarily a bad thing. It stems from a deeper understanding of my field, which has revealed the complexity and richness of potential paths. It means I am aware of the numerous opportunities available and am now discerning which path aligns best with my interests and goals. When faced with such uncertainty, the key is to embrace it as part of the journey and actively seek ways to navigate through it.

My goal is to apply to graduate school in psychology, and I believe that choosing a lab or program that aligns with my research interests is crucial. The ability to dedicate myself to a research area for many years requires finding the right fit, both academically and personally. The independent research I conducted this summer has increased my understanding of my current research field and what life as a graduate student might entail.

Academically, I am eager to continue my research. I plan to design a follow-up study to replicate my initial findings and focus on a more targeted sample. This will help validate my conclusions and strengthen my research. Professionally, I am considering collaborations with researchers from different disciplines, inspired by the interdisciplinary exchanges I experienced this summer. These collaborations could broaden the scope of my work and increase its impact. Personally, this fellowship has reignited my passion for discovery and deepened my curiosity.

In conclusion, the Brackenridge Fellowship has deepened my research understanding, enriched my field knowledge, and equipped me with valuable skills. I am so happy to have met with all the FHC fellowship recipients! We communicated, learned, and tackled tasks together, which enriched the entire experience. As I navigate the uncertainties of the future, I am guided by the lessons learned and the curiosity that this fellowship has instilled in me. I am excited about the path ahead and the opportunities that await in graduate school and beyond.
