Arrivederci Italy from Maren

My month in Italy was wonderful! From beginning to end, I found my study abroad experience to be incredibly enriching. I loved being able to explore cities that were part of a culture that I was unfamiliar with. My days were filled with lots of sightseeing, learning, and eating. I enjoyed being able to take class with other Pitt students while being in Italy. This meant that my Pitt professor and peers served as familiar bases that I could refer to and explore with. Being in Italy taught me that I am an avid explorer but also that pacing myself is incredibly important. I learned that asking for help while traveling is important. Since I had never been to Italy before, there were many instances where I found myself lost (both in social protocol and direction). In these cases, I learned that asking for help – either a local or another tourist – would solve  my confusion. I had to get over my fear of approaching strangers, and I learned that many Italian strangers are friendly and able to help you if you just ask! This new lesson somewhat changed my outlook on the world. I felt like I was able to reach out to more people, both within and outside of the Pitt program, and learn from them. By approaching people first, I was able to make more connections, which is an outcome that I greatly value. When I get back home, I plan on implementing this lesson into my daily life. I anticipate that I will make more of an effort to reach out to others, both for help and to help others in my classes, laboratories, and personal settings.  This trip exceeded my expectations in every way! I was surprised by how overwhelming being in a new culture was. The experience allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone and go on adventures I would not be able to possibly do in the United States. I am grateful for my experience in the Food Studies in Rome program. I tossed my coin into the Trevi Fountain, so I am sure I will be back soon!
