My name is Michael Estocin and I am pursuing a career in film and communications with a certificate in TV broadcasting. I am working with the SHURE-Grid fellowship to inform people who may not know the effects of cyber-security. This fellowship lasts for twelve weeks and for those weeks we give progress reports as to how we are doing with our case. Throughout the course of the twelve weeks we are making two demo videos with scenarios of our own choosing informing people about the effects of cyber-security. We are currently almost done with our first use case and will be moving onto the second use case shortly.
My mentor for the SHURE-Grid fellowship is Kevin Smith. Working head to toe with this fellowship has become such a highlight and learning opportunity that I would be able to take away and use in my future career.
My group use’s case we are working on is a scenario that happened in Ukraine where a Russian group ‘Sandworm’ hacked into a corporation’s computer systems back in December of 2015. This attack caused a multitude of power outages for companies customers. My team and I are working further to figure out the effects of this attack and what to do to further prevent this type of attack from happening again.
My current professional goal is that I want to be a news producer. The SHURE-Grid fellowship helps me maintain and build on my career. By working with this fellowship I am able to inform people about cyber-security through news. What I like is that you are able to interpret news in your own way and can be as creative in this fellowship as possible. As I mentioned above, my group is working on a case study of the Russia versus Ukraine power grid attack. We are formulating this into a mini news segment that would potentially be shown to students at a multitude of different universities. I was able to include elements of having news anchors, reporters, interviews with my group members, and a mini package explaining the attack and what the students are doing to further prevent the attack from happening again in the news segment. By adding these elements I am able to make it a more fun learning environment and it is much easier for students to be informed about cyber-security this way than it would just be from a basic lecture.
