Enhancing Mental Well-being: Self-Affirmation Study | Brackenridge Fellowship 2024

on

Hello everyone! My name is Louis, and I am excited to share my journey as a recipient of the Brackenridge 2024 Summer Fellowship. This fellowship marks an exciting chapter in my academic journey, allowing me to delve into a research project that I am deeply passionate about. As a Psychology major, I am keen to explore new horizons and learn from the diverse group of researchers gathered here.

My Research Project

Under the mentorship of Dr. Kevin Binning, my project seeks to explore the efficacy of Self-Affirmation Intervention. While promising in various studies, self-affirmation has shown inconsistent and context-dependent results. My research aims to uncover when and under what circumstances individuals effectively engage in self-affirmation. By understanding these mechanisms, we can better leverage self-affirmation to improve mental well-being.

This project was inspired by Dr. Binning’s course, where I developed a keen interest in the heterogeneous effects of Self-Affirmation. For those considering their own research projects, I encourage you to delve into the literature, identify gaps, and engage with your professors to explore potential studies.

Professional Goals and Fellowship Impact

My current professional goal is to excel in every phase of my research project, from hypothesis formulation to data analysis and dissemination of results. Academically, I aim to apply for graduate studies in psychology, where I can further specialize and contribute to the field.

The Brackenridge Fellowship is instrumental in this journey. The financial support allows me to dedicate my summer entirely to research. More importantly, the fellowship facilitates interactions with student researchers from various disciplines. Engaging with peers in fields such as neuroscience and biology expands my understanding and enhances my research methodologies. This interdisciplinary exposure is invaluable in helping me become a more well-rounded and innovative researcher.

Encouragement for Aspiring Researchers

For those of you who are passionate about a specific research question or interest, I encourage you to take the following steps:

  1. Curiosity and Literature Review: Deeply explore your curiosity and conduct a literature review to identify existing gaps.
  2. Methodology: Consider potential methodologies that effectively address your research question.
  3. Engagement: Engage with your professors or faculty members. Face-to-face communication can demonstrate your passion and potentially lead to collaborative opportunities.
  4. Fellowship Applications: Don’t hesitate to apply for research fellowships like Brackenridge. They provide essential support and a platform for growth.

Conclusion

I am incredibly grateful for the Brackenridge 2024 Summer Fellowship and the opportunities it provides. This summer promises to be a period of significant personal and professional growth, and I am excited to share my journey with all of you.
