I Never Want to Leave Copenhagen

I cannot believe I’m halfway done with my program in Copenhagen! It’s even better than I expected. The locals are friendly, the scenery is beautiful, the infrastructure is sustainable, and the lifestyle is very relaxed. The work-life balance here is unlike anything I have ever experienced. 3 o’clock hits and there is a rush of bikers commuting home. The use of bikes as the main mode of transportation is thrilling. It seriously is the best way to get around the city.

I have been studying in a neurodegeneration lab for the past 4 weeks now, and it has been the most fulfilling experience. Not only am I learning invaluable technical lab skills, but I can see how the experiments I am running and projects I am doing will be able to help others. Being surrounded by 17 other highly motivated and determined students is inspiring. Each and every one of them has a serious passion for science and a love for learning.

In the upcoming weeks, I will be finalizing the growth and cultivation of my brain organoid as well as comparing the morphology, cellular structure, and response to drugs with a diseased brain organoid modeling a patient with Alzheimer’s disease. Being able to work hands-on with a disease that is so devastating is such an amazing experience.

Copenhagen is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited. The “hygge” culture is unlike anything else. The city is filled with character, unique architecture, amazing pastries, and unlimited things to do. I have yet to find myself bored or unhappy here. I truly do understand why Denmark is voted one of the happiest countries in the world!
