Before embarking on my study abroad journey, I could not have imagined all the different ways that this program would impact my life. Studying abroad is truly an experience like no other that has the ability to teach valuable lessons and transform perspectives. As I look back on my weeks abroad so far, there are three major takeaways that have deeply resonated with me.
The first significant lesson that I have learned from my study abroad experience is that difference is not always a negative thing. As I have settled into my new city, I have started to notice all the things about it that differ from my home country. At first, some of these peculiarities were hard to adjust to. Why do the French always kiss each other when they meet up? Why don’t they ever use ice in their drinks? All these questions startled me a bit the beginning of my study abroad program. However, as I have gotten more familiar with France and its culture, these differences have become less and less daunting to me. When you go overseas, you learn that these cultural idiosyncrasies are simply a fact of life and something to be appreciated instead of criticized. Because really, what would be the point of studying abroad if everywhere in the world was the same?
Another important takeaway that I have realized since arriving in France is that studying abroad is an experience that will inevitably lead you to discover and grow. In the beginning, you are essentially starting a new life in a completely unfamiliar environment. Building up this new life (establishing routines, making friends, taking classes, etc.) is a unique process during which you develop a great deal of confidence and independence. I remember being so anxious when I arrived in Grenoble that I could barely eat the first couple of days. Looking back now though, I feel so much more confident and sure than I did back then. Embracing my life abroad has helped me discover things about myself that I never knew before and grow significantly as a person.
The final major lesson that I have learned abroad is to always say yes to new experiences. Studying abroad comes with many opportunities to say yes and experience new things, many of which are once in a lifetime deals. Since arriving in France, I have learned that you should always say yes to these opportunities, even if they may seem uncomfortable at first! The other weekend, for example, I was invited to go hiking up to the Bastille, which is a mountaintop fort in Grenoble. As a non-athletic person, I was skeptical at first because I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the group. However, when the day of the hike came, I ended up having a great time! It was an amazing bonding experience with my friends, and I got to see a gorgeous view of Grenoble from above. I am so glad I said yes to that experience, even if it did take me out of my comfort zone a bit.
All in all, I have very much enjoyed my time in France so far. I cannot wait to see what other lessons I learn as I continue with my program and my study abroad journey!
