To My Pre-IIP Self

on

Oh my, it’s the last week. I can’t believe I’m already saying that. One more week in Berlin and I’m out of Europe for a while. Well, kind of. This weekend I’m taking a short trip to Strasbourg, France which I’m seriously looking forward to, and then I’m returning to Berlin to meet up with my mom and sister. So technically I have over two more weeks, but the program that brought me here is coming to an abrupt close. I’m so glad I got a chance to come here. I knew I was set up to have an amazing summer but everything about the program surpassed all my high expectations. I’m grateful for the people I met, the new things I experienced, and everything I learned from my first ever internship. There are some things I wish I knew before coming here so I’m going to take some time to write a letter to my past self.

Dear Ryan,

What’s up? I’m just thinking about you right now waiting at the airport eager as ever to go on the trip of a lifetime. You are about to have an incredible summer surrounded by awesome people in a completely foreign country. I know you can’t wait to start the program but I’m telling you now, you should be even more excited even if you think that’s impossible. This is your first time in Europe, and you are going to absolutely love it. Everything about the culture will fascinate you, and you will quickly start to feel like a local. Do your best to soak everything in and make the most of the program, but be sure to set limits and don’t overdo it. You’re going to feel like a kid in a candy store and want to do everything and spend a bunch of money all at once but remember you have a full two months.

Be safe, and always make good decisions. Find a balance between work and play. While in the office, make sure to ask questions and make it your goal to learn as much about digital marketing as possible. Don’t be worried about the commute. Surprisingly, waking up and commuting to work was a highlight of the program because it made me feel like a fully functioning adult. Also, don’t forget COVID still exists so don’t be surprised when you’re given a hybrid work schedule. Another note, don’t do anything too stupid. If you have a sore throat, go to bed early and drink lots of water. Don’t pull an all-nighter because it will get worse and set you back several precious days. At least that’s what I imagine would happen, definitely didn’t happen to me. Of course not I don’t make poor decisions… All in all, don’t over think it and you’ll have an amazing trip that you’ll remember forever.

Sincerely,

Post IIP Berlin Ryan
