Upon my return to the US after my study abroad experience in Austria and Slovenia, I have been reflecting on how much I learned both inside and outside the classroom.
Through visits to hospitals, pharmacies, nonprofit organizations, disability centers, and public health agencies, I saw firsthand how Austria and Slovenia approach accessibility and support for vulnerable populations. As a Public Health major and Bioethics Certificate student, these experiences further fueled my interest in providing equitable healthcare. They also reminded me that no healthcare system is perfect. Every system has strengths and challenges, and we should learn from each other rather than searching for a single ideal model.
Outside the classroom, I learned the importance of cross-cultural communication. The language barriers were a challenge, especially when trying to read menus as a vegetarian. However, each interaction reminded me how many patients experience similar challenges when it comes to healthcare. These experiences strengthened my commitment to becoming a culturally competent physician.
Before studying abroad, I knew I wanted to become a physician with a public health focus. Now, I have a deeper understanding of how healthcare systems operate at both the community and policy levels. I am even more motivated to pursue a career that combines clinical medicine and public health advocacy.
For future students considering this program, my advice is simple: say yes. Take advantage of every opportunity, even if it lies outside your comfort zone. Attend cultural events, try local foods, and explore beyond the classroom. Some of my favorite memories were the most unexpected ones, whether it was hiking through snow on Untersberg Mountain, swimming in Lake Bled surrounded by the Alps, attending a German opera, watching the sunset over Budapest and the glimmering Danube River, or simply enjoying some gelato with friends. These moments made this experience truly unforgettable.
I returned to the US with a greater appreciation for global healthcare systems and a stronger commitment to health equity. I look forward to my future as the physician and public health professional I hope to become.
