Before visiting Belfast, I assumed the transition would be easy. Same language, broadly similar culture, I wasn’t expecting much of an adjustment. But it didn’t take long to realize I was wrong. The moment that made it real was stepping off the pavement and instinctively looking the wrong way before crossing the road.
Beyond the roads, it was the people and the culture that stood out most. Belfast has a genuine vibe to it, conversations happen easily, people are welcoming, and there’s a strong sense of local identity.
The slang was another reminder that even within the English language, there’s a lot of variation. Words like “craic” and “wee” and are woven naturally into everyday conversation. It was a small but clear sign that I was somewhere with its own culture and character. Sometimes it’s the small things, the way people speak, the direction of traffic, the phrases used, that show you most clearly where you are.
