Hello, everyone!
As I sit in my final moments here in Menton, France, I can hardly believe how quickly my semester abroad has flown by. The past few months have been an incredible journey—full of personal growth, intellectual discoveries, and unforgettable experiences. Looking back, I’m amazed by how much I’ve learned about the world and myself.
This semester at Sciences Po Menton has been an eye-opening adventure, filled with both academic challenges and cultural exploration. From studying the intricacies of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern politics to immersing myself in the rich history and language of the region, my academic experience has truly broadened my horizons. Each class was an opportunity to dive deep into the dynamics that shape the world, and I found myself engaged in stimulating discussions with peers from all over the globe. The multicultural environment here—where French, Italian, Arabic, and English flow freely—was intellectually enriching and constantly reminded me of the global interconnectedness of today’s challenges.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my time in Menton was my volunteer work with a local NGO supporting migrants and refugees. This experience has had a profound impact on me, both personally and professionally. I saw firsthand the struggles that refugees face as they navigate the complexities of migration and resettlement, and I felt an overwhelming desire to be part of the solution. This led me to a major realization: I want to pursue a career in human rights, specifically advocating for refugees and immigrants. This insight has solidified my decision to attend law school in the future and continue on a path dedicated to social justice and human dignity.
Personally, I’ve grown in ways I never expected. Living in Menton has taught me to slow down and savor life’s simple pleasures—whether it’s enjoying a croissant at a local café, taking in the beauty of the Mediterranean, or spending quiet evenings with friends. The relaxed pace of life here has allowed me to reflect more deeply on my values, passions, and goals. It’s a lesson I’ll carry with me long after I return to Pittsburgh.
Academically, I’ve gained valuable insights that will shape my future studies and career. The interdisciplinary focus of my coursework has inspired me to look at global issues from multiple perspectives, and the international exposure has deepened my understanding of the world. I feel more equipped to approach complex problems with a nuanced, open-minded perspective—skills that will be essential in both law school and my future career in human rights.
As I prepare to return to Pitt, I’m excited to bring these lessons back with me. I plan to continue my advocacy for refugees and immigrants, both through my academic pursuits and my extracurricular activities. The experiences I had volunteering here have given me a clearer sense of purpose, and I’m determined to continue advocating for those whose voices are too often unheard.
This semester in Menton has been a transformative chapter in my journey, and I’m incredibly grateful for every moment of it. The beauty of the Mediterranean, the warmth of the people I’ve met, and the deep sense of connection I’ve developed with the region will always hold a special place in my heart. As I move forward in my studies and career, I’ll carry the lessons of this experience with me, using them to shape a future where I can make a meaningful impact.
