Who, What, When, Where, and Why: An Introduction

Hi, I’m Jill. Here are a few things you should know about me: I am a rising senior, an Army ROTC cadet, and an extreme overachiever. I am a psychology major with minors in neuroscience and political science and a certificate in leadership. When I’m not on Cathy Lawn at 6 o’clock in the morning for PT, I can be found in class or at a Penguins game! However, its summer time, so I won’t be at any of the places I mentioned above. Instead, I will be found bouncing between Syracuse, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Fort Knox, and, most importantly, Austin.

In Austin, Texas, I will attend a conference on military social work and behavioral health. The conference runs from June 12th through the 14th. I will attend lectures and poster sessions during those three days to learn more about what military social work entails.

I stumbled upon the conference website one day in mid-February and knew I had to go. How does a social work conference appeal to a psych major? The answer is a plan to get my masters in social work and eventually work as an LCSW. What about the military side? Another easy answer, as an Army ROTC cadet, I will be given the opportunity to serve as an active-duty social worker after I graduate and commission as an officer. Clearly, this conference couldn’t have been more perfect for me!

I am looking forward to dipping my toes into the realm of military social work. Especially as an undergraduate, this conference will serve as an amazing networking opportunity. I will have the privilege of meeting people who have dedicated their lives to the welfare of others. These connections will allow me to have a support system to ask questions. It also acts as a boost when I eventually apply for the Army’s social work degree and internship program.

I will admit I am a little nervous. I am extremely passionate about soldier and veteran mental health, but I am also still just a student. Ultimately, I know that conferences are extremely supportive of students. This whole conference is also a learning experience. Meaning not knowing the answer is just another reason to learn even more! So although the conference is only three days long, I will be leaving it with more wisdom and knowledge than I could have ever imagined. I am greatly looking forward to every second of it!
